Proof Flying Eagle Cents 1856 1C Snow-9 PR64 PCGS. The Act of February 21, 1857, introduced the copper-nickel Flying Eagle cent and was intended to end the legal tender status of Spanish and Mexican coinage for strictly the U.S. decimal system coinage. The current Snow-9 piece is within obverse Die Stage C, while the reverse is an earlier Die Stage B. Just 2,000 to 3,000 1856 Flying cents were minted, mostly Snow-9 proof restrikes between 1857 and 1860; a plethora entered circulation, diminishing what examples remained in high grade. This boldly struck example displays brass luster with light notes of deepening oak tones. The planchet flaw denoted is along the right side of the ribbon, but proves to be non-intrusive to the appeal.
