Large Cents 1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars Edge, S-10, B-10, R.4, MS63 Brown PCGS. Breen Die State I. Chestnut-brown surfaces contain hints of steel-green and steel-gray. A few minor nicks southeast of the chin and an old, thin scratch above ONE are the only abrasions of note. Strike is simply exquisite, displaying all of the finer detail on each lock of hair, which is frequently missing, even on Mint State Wreath Cents. Overall eye appeal is exquisite.      Nine die marriages of Wreath Cents are known: Sheldon-5 through 11, the last of which is split into three sub-varieties based on edge type, as well as NC-2 through 5. NC-5 is truly non-collectible, as the only known example is impounded in the American Numismatic Society's collection, formerly in the Clapp collection. NC-2 is the only other Wreath Cent variety that still adheres to Sheldon's original 1949 definition of non-collectible (two or fewer examples known), and the NC-3 with three known rounds out the two varieties of Strawberry Leaf Cents. After that, the NC-4 is High R.7 and the S-7 is Low R.6. Of the remaining six varieties, S-10 is one of the scarcer ones at R.4.      This scarcity is especially magnified in higher grades, particularly when choice. The Noyes Census of the 12 best examples reaches down to VF25, and two-thirds of that list has Average or below average surfaces. This coin is listed fourth in Noyes' census and is graded AU55 (though lot 17 of the 1962 Judd sale was a different example), where Breen assigns the same grade, but lists it fifth. On top of this high placement in the condition census, this coin has passed through the hands of a number of famous numismatists.
