Large Cents 1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3, VF20 PCGS. Breen Die State I. Gorgeous chocolate-brown surfaces contain splashes of steel-gray. Wear only impacts the portrait on this well-defined Chain Cent. Five die marriages are known of this first design type of America's then-workhorse denomination. The NC-1 is semi-unique, but the other four are all of relatively similar scarcity, ranging from the High R.4 S-2 to the Low R.3 S-3, the present variety. When attributing the current coin, the S-1 can be immediately be ruled out due to the AMERICA reverse, and the S-4 can be eliminated due to the lack of periods. The S-2 contains a much wider spacing of the date than the present S-3, confirming its attribution. Given the number of Chain Cents that survive in very low grades and with significant problems, the present offering is a refreshing exception.
