Colonials 1786 New Jersey Copper, Stegosaurus Head, Straight Plow Beam, M. 14-J, W-4810, R.1, MS65 Brown PCGS. Ex: Newman. 154.3 grains. The reverse die that Dr. Maris described as Reverse J is known as the Biennial reverse and was the subject of a detailed 1989 study by Michael Hodder. That single reverse was combined with 10 different obverse dies dated 1786 and 1787. This alluring New Jersey colonial displays warm chocolate brown luster. The strike is exquisite and is closer to the rightmost part of the planchet with the legends pressed along the ridge. There are some minor abrasions within the fields, though they are inconsequential to the austere appeal of this example. PCGS has seen just 12 examples of the Straight Plow Beam pieces in Mint State, with just two achieving the highly covetable Gem Uncirculated grade. There is no finer example seen than this piece, evidenced by the current Rank 1 Registry set only having an MS62+ example. Listed on page 39 of the 2026 Guide Book. Ex: Virgil Brand; B.G. Johnson; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Eric P.
