Colonials 1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, Newman 2-C, W-8455, R.3 -- Corroded -- NCS. AU Details. Though long believed by researchers to have been struck in the United States circa 1776 as a pattern for a Federal dollar coin, in recent years the Continental dollar has been theorized as a private issue struck in Europe shortly after the Revolutionary War. Demand for examples is unabated. The present piece is nearly free from wear, but the mauve, cobalt-blue, and wheat-gold surfaces display scattered spots, most apparent above the 6 in the date, and on the reverse border near 7 o'clock. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
